Dive Watches

These timepieces are grossly popular with sportsmen.  This is mainly due to their robust looks and inherent water resistance capabilities.  These features alone, however, do not make a dive watch.Of pre-eminent importance to the dive watch is water resistance. This is not to be confused with waterproof.  The difference is this; waterproof means the watch can get wet and to be more accurate waterproof is a term that cannot be used in conjunction with watches, on the other hand water resistant means that the timepiece can withstand the pressures placed on it at various depths.Typically, a dive watch worth its salt will be water resistant up to 300 m. That’s a little over 980 ft and about 33 atmospheres greater pressure than at sea level.  A water resistance of at least 100 m is usually the minimum for a certification as a dive or scuba watch. One item just as, if not more than, important is a rotating bezel. A bezel is just a ring that surrounds the watch face. Many different timepieces, that are not dive or scuba related, sport a bezel. What sets apart the bezel on a dive watch is its function. On a dive watch, the bezel rotates and can be set to mark the time when the dive began. Tracking the minute hand from that position will inform the diver as to how long they have been under and the time remaining before they need to return to the surface. The bezel and its water resistance are not the only defining features of the dive watch. A good scuba divers watch will also have a dial or face that contrasts well with the timepieces markings. It is of great importance to read easily the information the watch presents.  Information should be clearly distinguishable at a range of 25 cm in pitch-black conditions. The timepiece should also give some indication that it is functioning; a luminous second hand.
