Chronograph watches
Precision and good looks.

What is a chronograph? Well a simple definition is a timepiece that tracks hours, minutes and seconds utilizing separate dials for each. This produces a face that contains as many as five dials. One dial tracks time as it passes. That is to say, the main dial is set and tracks the standard time at the location of the user. The other dials typically track time elapsed from a specific starting time. As you might imagine this requires up to three additional dials, one dial for hours, one for minutes and one for seconds. Not all chronographs contain all three additional dials. Some just track the hours, while others track just minutes. A stopwatch function necessarily defines a watch as a chronograph that just tracks the number of seconds elapsed since some fixed starting time. In essence, a chronograph is any timepiece that records the passage of time, no matter the unit. A chronograph will record how much time has passed. What about that fifth dial? Some chronographs also keep track of the phases of the moon, adding one more type of unit of measure. It is not common to see all five dials on a single dial; in most cases, a combination using only four dials is used.  Who wants a chronograph? Well, do you need to keep track of the passage of time, or do you simply need to know what time it is? A chronograph will do both of course. It will tell the time of day, and as discribed already, it will keep a record of the amount of time that has passed. Having a chronograph is a win-win situation. The question really boils down to style, looks and function. Chronographs are an accessory as much as they are a functional item of need. So, what look are you going for, simplicity of design and function, or intricacy and flare of design and function? If what you want is the former, choose a single dial dress or sport watch. If you want the latter, you cannot go wrong with a chronograph.
